The overthrow of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, and his replacement by the leader of an "Al Qaeda spin-off", fulfills a more than decade-long, US-led regime change campaign.
this is an obscenity in Syria. I don't care how weak a leader Assad was; this is going to be worse, I understand the silent slaughter, that ignored by the glorious west, has begun against Alawites (sp?). This is the course of dictatorships supported by global dictatorships. I am a senior, I don't plan for the future. But the young must and what can their plans be? Get out now before the US invades? Before Israel bombs? I would if I were they. There is no future but destruction for those who cannot defend themselves.
I second your observation that Assad's rule-by-torture had no role in US eagerness to topple him. But that's an understatement!
His (and earlier his father's) solid reputation for anti-Islamist savagery actually made him a valuable ally of Bush/Cheney White House post 9/11. For a few years Assad's Syria served among top destinations ("black sites") to send Afghan terrorism suspects for tortured confessions on their way to Guantanamo Bay.
Don't take my word for it; this was widely and repeatedly reported in major Western media at the time.
What about Russia? Isn’t there a bigger geopolitical element here?
Personally, I believe there is a deeper political history overlooked as well. The US/British transatlantic elites long wished to eliminate any non religious state, and both Iraq and Syria were part of the Ba’ath party. These governments created the religious tolerance and economic progress. How they went awry is another story. Perhaps being targeted for decades may have had something to do with it.
Simply characterizing Assad as a dictator is a bit propitiatory.
And what happens if/when they go to or even emigrate to the US, UK? If they get clearance, of course - the leader of the sainted White Helmets didn't. In the UK the Manchester bombing was the work of a Libyan dissident who had been cultivated by the security services for the overthrow of Gaddafi.
Right now US administration and media have bragging rights in taking Syria violently out of Moscow's orbit. But they forget that last time this EXACT process happened, the so-called triumph turned out to be a colossal poison pill for our side.
To drive the "evil" Soviets out of Afghanistan without American boots on the ground, we knowingly delivered the country on a silver platter to fanatic "freedom fighters" who soon flew airline jets into Twin Towers.
That blowback got NATO in a 20 year Afghan war that cost easily two trillion $$ and ended in failure.
The outcome of "liberating" Syria from the Russians may be different, but I'm not counting on it.
A big question now is what happens to Kurdish control of northeast Syria, the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), a.k.a., Rojava.
Fighting is ongoing between the Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and Turkish proxies the Syrian National Army (SNA), a rebranded Free Syrian Army, the so called "moderate rebels" of yesteryear. The SDF says that SNA is nothing other than ISIS; fighters even wear ISIS patches on their sleeves.
There are active fronts throughout Rojava. Will Uncle Sam stand by and watch his loyal proxy slaughtered?
Funny how we support Islamic radicals to spread 'democracy'
English author and academic Timothy Mitchell coined the term 'McJihad' to describe US/global capital's backing of various ultra-conservative terrorist groups. Syria is another unfortunate example.
The Neoliberals/Neoconservatives may have won a victory for themselves, but I can't help but feel their power is still on the ebb.
If I was Putin I move my warm water port to the shores of Lebanon, as more friendly. And perhaps the Lebanese people are looking for another gas station that is more reasonable then the French could ever offer. Gazprom might offer a better deal. Have to always be on the lookout to service the wants and needs of people, right? It’s just business right. To keep the whole enterprise safe, even a build a super duper secure submarine port too.
I think Syria isn’t economically viably anymore, buddy.
I occasionally recommended reading Elijah J Magnier teaser intros to his site. It's very rare he publishes an entire article for free as he did Yesterday, 'The life of Abu Mohammad al‑Julani: the “moderate” master of Syria’s Rebels‑jihadists.'
What peaked my interest was this line, "Al-Julani was appointed emir of Nineveh,"
To my consternation, The Pope and all religious denominations below him, Politicians and the MSM, did not mention or connect Islamic ISIS, Al-Qaeda or Nusra, blowing up the Islamic Mosque in Nineveh, Iraq containing the Tomb of Jonah in the Whale fame from the Jewish-Christian Tradition in 2014. That particular event was a RED FLAG WARNING SIGN to the World, History is Repeating itself, and we are on the Path to Destruction like Nineveh was some 2800 years ago?
To confirm that prospect, 2014 was the same Year the US orchestrated the Regime Change of the Democratically Elected Russian friendly Ukraine government, installing an UN-elected anti-Russian government appointed by Victoria Nuland appointed by Obama-Biden.
To paraphrase the Jonah story, God picked Jonah to go to Nineveh and warn them if they didn't change their ways, they were on the path to Destruction. It took 3 Days to walk from one end of Nineveh to the other.
Now Jonah didn't want to be a Buzzkill in a strange City, so he took a ship to a distant place, running away from doing what God charged him to do. When he was swallowed by the whale, there was no place left to run and hide. In that dire situation God reached him in the fish and Jonah resolved to do what had to be done.
Jonah walked only half way through Nineveh with the Message. From the king on down they repented, and Nineveh was spared Destruction THEN.
“I believe that everyone in life goes through phases and experiences,” Jolani told CNN last week. “As you grow, you learn, and you continue to learn until the very last day of your life.”
This would be laughable if the consequences weren't so devastating and diabolic.
I never went through a phase when I was young, where I was joining terrorist groups, cutting people's heads off, and massacring entire families....and covertly working for the most notoriously corrupt and diabolic Western "Intelligence" groups.
Was Al-Jolani really born in Syria Aaron? Why not highlight the sectarian violence, captured on video, that has already ensued? All and all a pretty weak synopsis of events I have to say.
Agreed, the effectiveness of sanctions in this case is a good question.
I suppose in Russia and Cuba there are no indigenous minority groups that can be turned into effective terrorists, and they both have relatively secure borders that make it difficult to import terrorist groups, unlike Syria, which had very porous borders.
Truly depressing picture. US foreign policy is one long repressive disaster.
True. They sow chaos BUT never rebuild.
It's going to boomerang back on the USA.
Doesn't really matter how far you are away from conflicts USA. The terrorists now have money!

Actually the reverse is also true.
Europe is flooded with Americans.
NO idea why because Europe has attached themselves to the ALMIGHTY Western Empire.
it's a STATEMENT from the Dem zombies. we must all stick together we globalists. and flee a difference of view.

Looking to the future: Money. It's obvious that these 'terrorists' are paid by the US Government to do their dirty work.
What happens when the US cannot/will not pay them?

Not for the first time the US and minions get into bed with very bad people. As far as I'm aware, this has always backfired horrendously.

Lebanon may be next on the chopping block.
Its very sad. It sucks in fact.

Al-Jolani is probably one of those guys that will go along with what the US wants as long as he’s getting his millions in “foreign military aid”.
