Hey Aaron, I am 23 and a college student in a masters program that studies justice studies. My mind is blown because I just wrote a Substack post not even a few hours ago discussing John Mearsheimer's perspectives on Ukraine, and comparing them to the likes of Robert Kagan. I have been looking up to you for a long time, in fact your journalism is one of the reasons I got into school and learning more about the world. I don't mean to put a plug in your comments but I wanted to show you the post I wrote this morning, and let you know that you are inspiring kiddos my age to write and learn more about the world! https://everettglynn.substack.com/p/on-the-russia-ukraine-war-a-war-of
Bravo, Everett! My students--just like you--have continued to give me hope for the future. Unlike the narrative that "today's kids don't want to work," I know better because I see it every day. Keep going! You couldn't have a better role model in Aaron.
Thank you for this excellent, albeit sobering, interview with Dr. Mearsheimer, Aaron. He is a much needed voice of reason who points out how the US policy-makers' efforts to steamroll, marginalize, and isolate Russia has left us with "the darkness ahead" and a new cold war.
Also, thank you for mentioning the wisdom of the late Professor Stephen F. Cohen. We need more sage voices to speak out about the reality of this dangerous situation before it is too late.
Every time I consider all of this I have a hard time believing that the EU thinks it is in their best interest to oppose Russia. With Russian Oil and Gas, crops and other trade, it seems to me that making a trading partner out of Russia is a far more salient position to take.
For example, we are led to believe that Germany was surreptitiously working against Russia while at the same time partnering with them on the Nord Stream which would be massively beneficial to their burgeoning economy, and their quality of life?
The whole idea stinks and just smells like U.S. hijinx. Of course we know that's true, but really, what is the whole NATO objective? It seems counter-indicated for the EU.
As MS has already asserted, a great but sobering interview. That this will not end well along with the near total ruination of ukraine, we can largely lay at the West's feet and their unfettered hubris.
Good interview Aaron, Mearsheimer a large power realist devises scenarios I have difficulty imagining could be realised but he is absolutely correct in considering many different scenarios. I cannot recall any large conflict in which any of the participants came out of conflict with what they envisaged before they went in.
Russia just wanted amerika & by extension a bunch of former soviet states where nazis & similar fascists have gained control often courtesy of amerika to back TF off. Now they are well past that point.
IMO amerika's over-optimistic attempt to destroy Russia before encircling China shows that far from realists amerika's foreign policy is determined by fantasists, even worse thus far there is insufficient pressure able to be brought upon the fantasists to believe that amerika will change course away from the fantasy.
Another outstanding podcast where we learn so much from people we trust - you and John together were amazing and what discussions should look like. I can't imagine how good it must feel for you to being holding your own with such impressive guests. As an aside, you opened my eyes to RFK, Jr's sad, almost unbelievable but unfortunately true, position on Palestine. I was so hoping he would get my vote if he survived the evil empire's attempt at total control.
Why did neither of you consider the obvious possibility of the US using nuclear weapons? And much as I respect your guest, it does not strike me that thirty years of aggression towards Russia is a “mistake.” That’s always the US line: good, well-intentioned folks, just making mistakes—Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, Ukraine, etc.
Good get, great interview Aaron. Heavy hitting geopolitical discussion. It is very depressing humanity is still in this nationalistic, tribal, petty competitive phase. So much wasted life and resources.

Informative, eloquent, classy conversation.
Thank you, Aaron.

The People of Europe are longing for a peaceful and productive relationship with Russia. The US is a seriously dysfunctional partner.
Thank you John, thank you Aaron -- an outstanding interview.

Thank you, Aaron. An excellent interview. As for Sergey Karaganov’s analysis - Gilbert Doctorow was very sceptical of Karaganov’s influence in Russia.

Aaron, does the Apple podcast for this article cover the entire article? Or is their different or more on this Substack article?
Warning:
Stay away of any Gonzalo Lira topic -- he is and has been controlled by Ukraine secret service.
Everything he says is a pure BS.
